FORGE Medical. Forging excellence in emergency medicine.

Clinician-led procedural training · Pretoria

Practise the procedures you can’t afford to learn on the day.

FORGE Medical runs small-group courses in the rare, time-critical skills of emergency, critical care and retrieval medicine. Our first course, BLADE, teaches seven life- and limb-saving procedures on fresh cadaveric tissue.

BLADE: Bedside Life-saving Airway, Drainage and Emergency Procedures course

First course · Registering interest now

One day. Seven procedures. Fresh tissue.

BLADE is for senior emergency medical officers and emergency medicine registrars. Groups of four work one cadaver through four stations, so every delegate performs every procedure.

  • Lateral canthotomy and cantholysis
  • Surgical cricothyroidotomy
  • Resuscitative thoracotomy
  • Chest wall and limb escharotomy
  • Upper and lower limb amputation

The FORGE curriculum

Seven courses, one standard

BLADE runs first, with RAPTOR and SHOCK next in development. The other courses will open in turn, each built the same way: small groups, hands-on practice and practising clinicians as faculty.

RAPTOR

Retrieval and Advanced Prehospital Trauma Operations

Clinical and operational skills for retrieval and prehospital trauma teams, from scene to receiving unit.

Next in development

SHOCK

Mechanical Circulatory Support & VA ECMO

Patient selection, cannulation strategy and circuit troubleshooting for VA ECMO and temporary mechanical support.

Next in development

REACT

Resuscitative Emergency Airway & Critical Techniques

The physiologically and anatomically difficult airway, from first-pass success to the front-of-neck access decision.

In development

VENT

Advanced Mechanical Ventilation

Modes, lung-protective strategy and troubleshooting for the deteriorating ventilated patient in the ED and in transport.

In development

PULSE

Point-of-Care Ultrasound & Life Support Echocardiography

Focused ultrasound and echo in cardiac arrest and shock: what to look for, when, and how it changes management.

In development

SURGE

Damage Control Resuscitation & Massive Haemorrhage

Haemorrhage control, blood product strategy and damage-control physiology from the first minutes of the trauma call.

How we teach

Hands on, from the first minute

Real tissue where it counts

Procedural courses use fresh cadaveric tissue. Planes, resistance and anatomy behave the way they will when you have to do it for real.

Four to a station

Groups stay small so every delegate performs every procedure, with faculty correcting technique at the bedside rather than from the front of the room.

Taught by practising clinicians

Faculty are emergency, critical care and retrieval clinicians who teach from current practice, including when to do a procedure and when not to.
