Mechanical Circulatory Support & VA ECMO

SHOCK is planned as a hands-on course in deciding when a patient needs mechanical circulatory support, getting them onto VA ECMO safely, and keeping the circuit running.

Planned content

  • Indications and contraindications for VA ECMO, including extracorporeal CPR
  • Ultrasound-guided percutaneous femoral cannulation
  • Circuit set-up, priming and emergency troubleshooting
  • Early management on support: anticoagulation, left ventricular distension and differential hypoxaemia
  • Where other temporary mechanical support devices fit

Who it is for

Emergency and intensive care doctors, and the nursing and perfusion teams who work with them, in units that offer or refer for ECMO.

Dates and format

SHOCK is still being developed, and the content above may change. Dates, venue, fee and CPD accreditation will be published when it opens. People on the interest list hear first.
